Located at the northern tip of Borneo island it remains a global biodiversity hotspot despite decades of forest and habitat loss. All is not as well as it would seem.According to Dr Laurentius Ambu Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department “ In the 80’s most of Sabah was still dense forest. Now we have a few good sized protected forests but the rest is all fragmented habitat.”
It is this habitat fragmentation that is leading to the decline in population of some of Sabah’s most iconic animal species. The Borneo orangutan numbers show a decline with every population study conducted. Reports of human-elephant conflicts are increasing in frequency both situations showing that their populations are straining to survive in the wild.
Dr. Ambu was further quoted as saying that the lowland areas are unfortunately preferred by both wildlife and agriculture especially palm oil which is the main revenue earner for the state government. Conservation groups including French NGO HUTAN and Danau Girang Field Centre which have studied wildlife and biodiversity in the region also issued strong warnings that unless something is done quickly Sabah will lose much of its biodiversity.
As a popular tourist destination however the protection of its natural treasures does also have considerable influence on government decisions on land use and development. The wildlife department is hoping that this will convince the state to support its call to create the Sabah Orangutan Conservation Alliance ( SOCA )
It has pulled together all stakeholders with an interest in Sabah including conservation groups replica hamilton seaview palm oil and timber industries non profit groups including local and international NGOs and local organisations to work together with one common goal under the direction of the Sabah Wildlife Department. In a conference held in Kota Kinabalu this past month zenith replica watch corum special editions replica conservation groups and local organisations showed strong support for the new iniative underlining that fact that enough conversations have been had and its now time for conservation. The greatest hope for the success of this initiative was the interest and commitment shown by representatives of the palm oil industry to work with all parties to realise the bold visions of this initiative.
To address the ongoing threats against its wildlife and biodiversity bvlgari diagono replica watch the wildlife department issued a 10 point action plan to remove those threats. The use of the orangutan as an iconic species serves to inform government industry and the world at large that there are some very special wild animals in serious need of protection in Sabah.
